‘How could a pregnant woman not find a place to stay in the inn? Were there no special reservations? How was she going to cope this night? They had nowhere else to go. Joseph needed a miracle.’

Ceaser Augustus, the Roman Emperor had decreed that a census should be taken throughout the nation.  So Mary and Joseph had come to Bethlehem, Joseph’s ancestral town to be counted. It was a long dusty journey.

But finally, they had arrived. My back aches, she cried out, did Ceaser really need to count us now? She asked with her eyes weary and puffy. She could see Joseph, her fiancée, talking to the inn manager to consider the options available when ‘oops, her water broke! Joooooseph! The baaaaaaaby is coming she cried out.

Tiny droplets of sweat trickled down Joseph’s cheeks, his heart was racing so fast, he went back to the inn manager and explained his precarious situation, Sir my wife has gone into labor, please help me, the inn manager was moved but…. Dejected, Joseph walked out of the inn, what was he going to do now?  Oh! we have a stable close by, it’s not what you want but it is better than nothing don’t you think? Joseph thought for a minute. A stable? He was about to protest when ‘Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa’ Mary’s screams pierced through the walls again. The stable is fine he replied immediately. No time abeg.

Few minutes later, baby Jesus was born, the weather was freezing cold and Mary wrapped her new born in swaddling clothes before laying him in the manger. The sheep baahed and cows moooed to signal their welcome of the new born.  They had witnessed the birth of the savior of the world.
Although unannounced, shepherds visited the baby Jesus, they said they saw angels who had announced that the savior had been born, hence they came to worship him. His parents wondered, ‘what kind of child is this?’ Almost everything about him was a miracle.

Rich, powerful and influential visitors from the east also came to visit Mary and Joseph’s new born. Their gifts could only have been for a king. According to them, they saw a star and followed it. What star? Mary, on the other hand kept these things in his heart. He looked like any other new born child, but he was no ordinary child.

‘For unto us a son is born, unto us a child is given and the government shall be upon his shoulders, his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.’
This baby restored hope to mankind and gave you a reason to live. We celebrate the birth of this King who came in form of man to restore us back to God. His name is Jesus and He is the reason for the season. Do not excuse him from the Christmas equation. It’s not just about the clothes, shoes, food and excitement. He is the essence and substance in CHRISTmas.

If you think you have no reason to be grateful, go and ask those who wanted to see another Christmas but are six foot under, they’ll most likely tell you they want to exchange positions with you. Oh sorry they cannot even talk. When there is life there is still hope
This season, don’t think about yourself alone, make somebody smile, somebody who may never be able to repay you. Do not just decorate your house, decorate hearts. Think of other children apart from yours, do what the One who we celebrate during this season would do.

Let me know what you think about this special day. What makes Christmas special to you. Send your COMMENTS.
