HELLO GRADUATE! (2)

Tuesday, 30 June 2015

Dear Class of 2015,

CONGRATULATIONS!

You have finally made it to the finish line. Four, five years in any tertiary institution is not beans o.
You are now a graduate! …What next?
I’m sure you remember how you just wanted to be free, explore and just bask in the joy of being a graduate. Chai! When you will count down the days to finishing and how much you anticipated your convocation? I know how you feel! Welcome to the league.

So now what? The convocation has come and gone and what are your plans?  You know those of us who have graduated, have learnt some things you can definitely benefit from, my dear please learn from us! Experience is the better teacher. Learning from other peoples experience is the best teacher. You know the normal thing after convocation is to wait for NYSC, serve, finish serving, get a job, marry, give birth, grow old and….  But there is more to life than just that.

There are some things I will like to share with you
Someone once said that her favorite childhood memory was not paying her bills! Hence she wished she
could become a child again. That’s one of the first things that will happen when you graduate. You start
paying your bills! Not necessarily house rent or nepa bills, but there are some things that you parents did for you when you were in school but  Few months after you graduate, they will just change!

They’ll just stop giving you monthly allowance! They’ll say you are an adult! Chai. Its only when they know you reeeeeeaaaaly need it that they’ll just help your situation. And the longer you stay as a graduate the more the money reduces. Except if your parents are in charge of the World Bank or something but for those of us who know that there is no free money anywhere, listen up o!
Although, it is very good to graduate (in fact when I did mine, I rocked it) I was on top of the world.( you can check some of my pictures here) But my dear that it is not the end of the world. In fact it’s the beginning of greater things, it’s another journey. Gone are those days when just being a graduate earned you a good job and a car. There is so much to be done and you have your whole life ahead of you. There is nothing wrong in resting a bit after the stress of a four year journey and then the convocation but one two, three, four months after and you are still resting! Hmmmm! Yet you have so many dreams, goals and ambitionsIf you take it slow at this time, when will you actually start?

Your certificate is not a guarantee that you will get a job. The world has gone past just owning paper! You have to deliver value!
Your certificate is not a guarantee that you will get a job. Employers are looking for people who can add value! Aint nobody going to keep you employed if you can’t add value to their company, even if you finished with a first class upper. You have to keep developing yourself; you need to be able to bring something extra to the table. If you can’t life after school will be HARSH, very harsh. Other skills will be needed to add to your certificate. So many people have what you have, what makes the difference is the extra. To every first class graduate, note that even if your first class gets you a job, only first class RESULTS will keep the job or help you progress!

Read, you need to keep updating yourself about the latest trends in your chosen field, knowledge is king! Volunteer your services when necessary (this is especially important for fresh graduates who have not had reasonable work experience), acquire as many skills as you can related to you field, it gives you an edge. Most times you will need to get these skills on your own because our educational system sadly does not provide for this.  You have to keep developing yourself; you need to be able to bring something extra to the table.

For budding entrepreneurs, be sure to have somebody you can learn from because you will need guidance along the way, but start from somewhere, don’t be an entrepreneur only in your mind!
Please remember that it takes handwork, consistency and patience to become successful. Most of us want to just ‘blow’ I know you understand what that means. But greatness takes time dear. Rome wasn’t built in one day, most of the people who have successful and sustainable careers did not achieve the feat in one day. Greatness is a process.
Get Focused! Get Organized!! Get Busy!!!
All the best!
See you at the top
